Surface Spacing

This dialog box provides context sensitive help.

The Surface Spacing dialog box allows users to:

See a table of surface depths and inter-surface spacing for all surfaces, at any desired position.

Move the cursor and dynamically see depths and inter-surface spacing of two surfaces on the status bar.

Depths are shown with respect to the current surface. Data are collected in a table containing four columns:

1.surface name,

2.surface height coordinate Z,

3.surface Depth below the current surface and

4.surface spacing Z Diff from the surface immediately above (except the first surface in the list for which this spacing is always assigned to zero).

surf_spac0

The surfaces in the table are sorted by depth below the current surface. So changing position (E,N) may change the surface order in the list.

The user may select two particular surfaces to observe their z-coordinates, depths and spacing. These parameters are shown in two additional lines above the general table. They are also presented on the status bar while moving the cursor in the current terrain window.

surf_spac1

Initially the position (E,N) is taken from the cursor position in the last active Terrain Window. However the user may change it either directly through the numerical fields E and N or graphically (using the Move Cursor Button) with a mouse.

The following is a description of the items in the Surface Spacing dialog box.

Close Button

The Close button closes the Surface Spacing dialog box.

Move Cursor Button

This button allows users to graphically set the (E,N) point on the current surface. Z-Coordinates, depths and spacing of the two selected surfaces are shown on the status bar while moving the cursor.

surf_spac2

A left mouse button click accepts the new cursor position and returns to Surface Spacing dialog box. A right button click just cancels this mode.

Help Button

This button provides context sensitive help for this dialog box. Click on an item in the dialog box, then click the Help button or press the F1 key to see Help for the selected item.

Current Surface

This is the name of the surface in the current terrain window. All depths in the dialog box are calculated with respect to the current surface.

E

This specifies the East coordinate at which the heights of the surfaces are to be shown.

N

This specifies the North coordinate at which the heights of the surfaces are to be shown.

Z

This is the height of the current surface at the (E,N) position.

1st Inner Surface name

This field allows users to select a particular first surface from the list of all surfaces. When it is selected the appropriate values (with respect to the current surface) are shown in the fields Z and Depth. These values are also shown on the status bar. Moving the cursor on the current surface after pressing the Move Cursor Button does this. They are denoted on the status bar as 1st Depth and 1st Z respectively. This option allows users to pay more attention to the surface of greatest interested.

2nd Inner Surface name

This field allows users to select a second particular surface from the list of all surfaces. When it is selected the appropriate values (height and depth with respect to the current surface) are shown in the fields Z and Depth. A difference Z1 – Z2 between first surface Z and second surface Z is placed in a field Z Diff. These three values are also shown on the status bar. Moving the cursor on the current surface after pressing the Move Cursor Button does this. They are denoted on the status bar as 2nd Depth, 2nd Z and Diff respectively.

Z column

This column shows Z coordinates of all surfaces including the terrain surface. The list of surfaces in the table is sorted by the values in this column.

Depth column

This column shows the depths (with respect to the current surface) of all surfaces including the terrain surface.

Z Diff column

This column shows the distance between the surface in this row and the nearest surface above it.
